Meet Sumi

Democratic Ward 1 Council member Sumangala “Sumi” Kailasapathy

Welcome. Thank you very much for visiting my web site. My name is Sumi Kailasapathy, and I have lived in Ann Arbor for 19 years. My husband Giri and I have two sons, one who attends Washtenaw Community College and the other is a middle school student at Clague. We currently live in the Logan/Clague area of Ward 1.

I am a CPA and work in downtown Ann Arbor. I have an undergraduate degree in economics & political science from Wellesley College, and graduate degrees from the New School for Social Research. I taught at Eastern Michigan University for ten years prior to my career in public accounting.

In my first two terms on Council, I have developed close relationships with many of my constituents who are concerned about the impact City decisions have on our neighborhoods and our environment. They feel quality of life issues, the very reasons they choose to live in Ann Arbor, are being ignored by the majority vote on council in favor of economic development and density.

Ward 1 residents asked me to focus on essential municipal services, public safety and basic infrastructure needs and I believe I have represented their priorities during my time on council. Ward 1 residents encouraged me to run for reelection to continue to be their voice on council.

I consider that being a responsible steward of the City’s tax revenue is a priority for Council members. I take this trust very seriously. I add my professional knowledge and experiences to bring openness, transparency and accountability to this process. Citizens want accountability and transparency in all aspects of their government. I believe checks and balances are important for a democracy.

I look forward to discussing these priorities with you. Please feel free to contact me via phone or email. I am honored to be serving as your Ward 1 City Council member, and I look forward to meeting with you as I campaign.
